Hello everyone, this is Hytale.game. We’ve just received the very first official Hytale FAQ, published by Patrick ‘Lyall’ Derbic, the game’s executive director. In it, he answers the most frequently asked questions from the community online.
To provide you with the most accurate information, we present below the complete set of questions and answers.
Official Hytale FAQ
Patrick ‘Lyall’ Derbic (Executive Director of Hytale) answered the following questions:
Platforms and Access
Will Hytale be on Steam?
No, not initially. We want to spend our time in Early Access working with the community and improving the game, rather than being burdened by negative feedback from players who aren’t yet well-informed about what we’re doing. Steam is a great marketing tool, but one we may never need. That doesn’t mean we’ll never use it—just that we don’t see the need for it yet.
Will there be a console version of Hytale?
No, Hytale’s Early Access will be PC only (Mac and Linux are still to be determined). We plan a console release at a later stage, but it requires a lot of work on the backend systems to make it a reality. For now, we’d like to focus on creating a great game first.
Can I play Hytale on mobile?
There will be no mobile version of Hytale for Early Access. We are still evaluating what would be required to make this a reality and will keep you informed as soon as we know more.
Game Editions and Monetization
What does each edition of the game contain?
While the content of the editions will be revealed soon, I can already share that we plan to expand the content of each edition, even the Standard Edition, over time during Early Access. As you run through the game, helping us improve it every day, we need to make sure you look good while doing it 🙂
Can I improve my edit later?
Yes! If you haven’t already purchased the Cursebreaker Edition, you will be able to upgrade your edition of the game at a later stage and only pay the difference between your old and new editions.
How long will these editions be available?
These editions and their contents will only be available during our Early Access period. You will retain these cosmetics even after the editions are no longer available.
Can I give Hytale as a gift to my friends and family?
We haven’t implemented a gifting feature yet, but we’re working hard to have it finished as soon as possible. That said, I currently doubt we’ll have it ready when the game launches in Early Access. As soon as it’s complete, we’ll let you know.
Is there a pre-purchase bonus?
No. Given the game’s current state, we don’t think that would be fair to our players, who prefer to wait until the game is ready for them. Furthermore, we’re generally not big fans of artificially creating “fear of missing out” (FOMO) with a pre-purchase bonus.
Will Hytale support regional pricing?
We are actively working with our partner to make this work for a limited number of countries initially. I can’t promise we’ll have it ready in time for pre-orders, but we’re doing our best to make it happen. Since we were very uncertain about being able to make this happen on time for some time, we initially reduced the price of the Standard Edition to $19.99 USD worldwide. This should hopefully make the game more accessible, even though we won’t have regional pricing just yet. We haven’t forgotten our communities in all the different regions of the world, and we’re working hard to make regional pricing available to them as soon as possible.
Will there be cosmetics you can buy to support Hytale’s development?
Currently, you can obtain special avatar cosmetics through Early Access editions. We may offer additional cosmetics later, once the game is in a better state or when we introduce minigames. One thing is certain: when it comes to monetization, we will never add Pay-to-Win (P2W) options. Official cosmetics will remain fair and balanced, and we will continue to add free cosmetics over time. This approach helps keep the base price low, grow the community, and cover long-term costs such as updates, live services, and minigame infrastructure. Official avatar cosmetics are the only area we are keeping to ourselves for now, although we may involve the community later. That said, modders can still create visual mods such as furniture, pets, hats, and avatar cosmetics. Since this is not official game content, any player who wants to see these cosmetics must have the mod installed. We would like to prevent mods from replacing our official cosmetics and creating confusion for all players, so please respect this. Third-party servers are allowed to replace cosmetics to match their theme, or to sell their own cosmetics exclusively for their server to cover their costs. However, we ask that servers continue to support the official cosmetics, as this helps us continue developing tools, resources, and updates for them. In the future, we may also work directly with successful artists so they can sell their work in the official in-game store. This is a long-term goal and not something we can promise today. Our aim is to create a great game and support the community without turning the experience into a shopping mall.
Game Features
Will there be pets and animal taming?
These features are not ready yet, but are planned for the game, yes.
Is there a fishing system at the exit?
Unfortunately not yet – we’re still working on an interesting design for that (no pressure, Zumulus).
Will Hytale have a voice proximity chat feature?
We’re close to having a similar system working, but it won’t be ready for the early access release. Our goal on the technical side is to ensure the game has no known crashes and as few annoying bugs as possible.
Will the game be available in my local language?
Initially, Hytale will only be available in English, but the game is already built with localization in mind. We had a great experience with Crowdin, so with the community’s help, we can create an amazing localized experience for everyone. Maybe some of you will even want to bring back the pirate language… YARRRR!!
Creator and Third-Party Server Monetization
Does Hypixel take a share of the revenue from my third-party server?
As Simon has already publicly stated, we take 0% for the first two years from any third-party server or modder who wants to monetize their work. This doesn’t mean there are no costs at all. Please always factor in monetization platform fees, payment provider fees, etc.
What happens after 2 years?
We can’t promise a precise percentage yet, as it will depend on many factors. What we can say today is that our share will never exceed 20%. If things go as planned, we may never even reach 20%. In an ideal scenario, a third-party server is self-sufficient, has its own infrastructure, creates excellent content for its player base, has its own moderation team, and fair and transparent monetization. Such a server would require little to no attention from us and would therefore receive a much lower percentage. At a later date, if we decide to offer hosting and moderation services to partners, then the percentage could be higher.
Creator Program and Usernames
How do you combat scalpers of unique usernames or usernames belonging to a well-known person?
If someone appropriates a username solely to resell it, trade it, demand a ransom, or maliciously block others from obtaining it, we will reclaim the name as stipulated in our Terms of Service and EULA. So, if you’re someone currently saving up a lot of money, thinking you can buy usernames to extort some content creators, I’m sorry to have ruined your day!
Can I support my favorite content creator?
If they participate in our Creator Program, you can use their code at checkout. While this doesn’t give you any direct benefit, the person you’re supporting will be grateful, as it will allow them to create more of their excellent content for you and many others!
Who can participate in the Creators Program?
Anyone who regularly creates Hytale content (videos, music, mods, art, streams, etc.) can apply. We understand that Hytale hasn’t launched yet, but you can still apply if you make general gameplay videos and also plan to cover Hytale. The verification process may take some time, as we expect a large number of applications once the program launches.
How much will I receive as a participant in the Creators Program?
The sales percentage you’ll receive from your code will initially be 5%, until we recoup the game’s development costs. After that, we plan to increase it to 7%. These percentages are the same for all creators—no one gets a special deal. There are currently no plans to increase the rate, as we’re trying to keep the game’s price low while ensuring the long-term viability of the company and the team. Modders can also participate in the program, creating a much better environment for free mods. Initial purchases and edition upgrades will be eligible. This will also apply to future cosmetic additions.
